🪪 Credit Cards With an ITIN: What Each Issuer Has Actually Published
Many articles list banks that "accept ITIN" without showing where that comes from. This guide only counts an issuer as accepting ITIN if the issuer itself says so on its own website. We checked those pages in October 2026. Where an issuer says nothing, we say that too. Approval is always the issuer's decision, and an ITIN being accepted on the form does not mean any particular card will be approved.
Issuers with official ITIN wording
Chase: its application guide says credit card applications are open to US residents who have either a Social Security Number or an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number. Capital One: its ITIN explainer, dated April 2026, says Capital One has a number of credit cards you may be able to get with an ITIN. It does not list which cards, so check the specific card's application page. Zolve, a card aimed at newcomers, says on its homepage that you can apply with a passport, an SSN or an ITIN.
Partial or limited wording
Wells Fargo: its retail-services card FAQ says you will need your SSN or ITIN, income information and an email address. That page covers store-branded cards Wells Fargo issues for retailers. We did not find the same statement for its general cards such as Active Cash. U.S. Bank: its help center says ITIN holders can keep a secured card and use it, but U.S. Bank can only upgrade a secured card to a regular card if you have an SSN.
Issuers with no ITIN statement we could find
Citi has an education page that lists "SSN or ITIN" among things you will likely need, but it reads as general advice, not a Citi policy. American Express has an article about cards without an SSN, but we could not confirm an ITIN policy. Bank of America's application FAQ asks for a Social Security number and says nothing about ITIN. Discover's page for immigrants says only that some card companies may accept applicants without an SSN. We found nothing from Barclays. If you want one of these issuers, call before you apply and ask whether your ITIN is accepted on the application.
Before you apply with an ITIN
Get the ITIN from the IRS before you apply. Use the same name spelling and address on the card application that appear on your ITIN letter and bank account. Have proof of US income ready, since issuers ask for income on every application. If you later receive an SSN, contact each card issuer and the three credit bureaus so the accounts end up on one credit file.
If you are turned down
Read the reasons the issuer gives for the denial. A thin file or no credit history is a different problem from an unaccepted ID number. With no history, a secured card such as Capital One Quicksilver Secured is the usual next step, but check its application for ITIN first, since Capital One says only some of its cards take ITIN. Firstcard also advertises that it accepts applicants without an SSN, but in October 2026 its site only offered a waitlist, so it is not an option you can apply for today.

Chase's own application guide says applicants need either an SSN or an ITIN and must be US residents. Chase still decides on each application.
