💼 Business Credit Cards for LLCs, Sole Proprietors and New Businesses

Freelancers, sole proprietors and small LLC owners can apply for business credit cards, usually with their own Social Security Number and their own credit history behind the account. This guide covers what issuers ask for, what a personal guarantee means for you, how some business cards affect your personal credit report, and what to sort out before applying.

You usually apply with your SSN, not just an EIN

Chase's education page says Chase does not offer business credit cards that only require an EIN. Its application lets you enter your SSN instead of an EIN if you do not have one yet, and Chase says freelancers and sole proprietors can use their SSN to apply. Chase also says any work that produces a legitimate income can be considered for a business card, and that issuers may weigh how long the business has operated and its profits. Report your business revenue and history as they are. Approval and the credit limit are the issuer's decision.

What a personal guarantee means

Chase describes a personal guarantee as a legal agreement that the cardmember is personally liable for business debts or defaulted payments. Forming an LLC does not by itself remove this: if the card agreement includes a personal guarantee, an unpaid business card balance can be collected from you. Read the cardholder agreement for the words "personal guarantee" or "personally liable" before you apply.

Which business cards show up on your personal credit report

Applying usually means a hard inquiry on your personal credit report, which Chase confirms for its business cards. After approval, reporting differs by card. Capital One's page (September 3, 2026) says Spark Cash Plus, Venture X Business and Venture Business do not report card usage to the consumer credit bureaus while the account is in good standing, but may if it falls out of good standing, such as through nonpayment. Spark Cash, VentureOne Business, Spark Cash Select and Spark Classic regularly report the primary cardholder's activity, good and bad, to the personal bureaus. For other issuers, look for a reporting statement in the card's terms or FAQ, or ask the issuer directly.

Visa status and running a business

Whether your visa or immigration status allows you to run a business or earn self-employment income is an immigration-law question. This site does not answer it. Ask an immigration attorney before you open a business, apply for a business card, or put business income on an application.

Before you apply: a checklist

Have your legal business name (or your own name if you are a sole proprietor), business address, EIN if you have one, SSN, years in business, yearly business revenue, and your personal income ready. Decide whether you want the account to appear on your personal credit report, then check that card's reporting statement. Read the personal guarantee terms. Keep business and personal spending on separate cards so your records stay clean.

Frequently asked questions

Can I get a business card with only an EIN?

Not at Chase. Chase says it does not offer business credit cards that only require an EIN. Most issuers ask for your SSN and check your personal credit.

Can a sole proprietor without an LLC apply?

Chase says freelancers and sole proprietors can use their SSN to apply for a business credit card. Approval is the issuer's decision.

Will a business card hurt my personal credit score?

The application usually adds a hard inquiry to your personal report. Ongoing reporting depends on the card; Capital One publishes which of its business cards report to the personal bureaus.

Can I run a business on my visa?

That is an immigration-law question. Ask an immigration attorney; this site does not give immigration advice.
