🚫 Credit Cards No Longer Taking New Applications: The Evidence, and What Cardholders Should Check
Old reviews and search results keep recommending cards that can no longer be opened. We keep those cards' pages on this site so existing links still work, but we mark them as closed to new applications and remove the apply buttons. This guide lists the seven cards we marked, with the issuer page that shows it, as checked on October 15, 2026. We only report what the pages showed. We do not guess at reasons or at what happens next.
Cash back and student cards
Deserve EDU Mastercard for Students: deserve.com/edu returns a 404 error, and since August 2025 Deserve has notified EDU cardholders that their accounts are being closed. Open cards to look at: Zolve Azpire, Discover it Student, Capital One Quicksilver Student. Petal 2 Cash Back No Fees Visa: the Apply button on petalcard.com leads to registration.petalcard.com, which says Petal is now part of Tilt and sends applicants to Tilt's own cards. Look at: Chase Freedom Rise, Upgrade Cash Rewards Visa, Discover it Student. Chase Freedom Student: the product address now redirects to Chase's page for people new to credit, where the card Chase offers is Freedom Rise. Look at: Chase Freedom Rise, Discover it Student, Capital One Quicksilver Student. Citi Custom Cash: the product page says Citi stopped accepting applications on May 28, 2026, suggests the Citi Double Cash instead, and says existing cardmembers are not affected. Look at: Citi Double Cash, Citi Strata. Firstcard Secured Credit Builder Card: every application button on firstcard.app shows "Join Waitlist", so it cannot be applied for directly; its site still says it accepts applicants without an SSN. Look at: Zolve Azpire, Capital One Quicksilver Secured, Discover it Student.
Rewards and travel cards
American Express EveryDay: the product page returned "Sorry, we are unable to load this page", and Amex's no-annual-fee category page listed only Blue Cash Everyday and Blue Cash Preferred. Look at: Blue Cash Everyday, Blue Cash Preferred. Citi Rewards+: the product address redirects to Citi Strata. Look at: Citi Strata Premier, Citi Double Cash. U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve: the product page was taken down and the address redirects to U.S. Bank's credit card overview. Look at: U.S. Bank Altitude Connect, Capital One Venture X, Chase Sapphire Reserve. Barclays AAdvantage Aviator Red: the Barclays product page returns a 404 error, and Citi now issues the AAdvantage cards in our catalog. Look at: Citi / AAdvantage Platinum Select, American Airlines AAdvantage MileUp.
If you still hold one of these cards
A card closed to new applicants is not the same as a closed account. Log in to the issuer's site or app and confirm the account still shows as open with a credit limit. Read every letter and email from the issuer: Regulation Z generally requires 45 days' written notice before a significant change in terms, such as a higher annual fee or APR. Check your rewards balance and the program terms on what happens to unredeemed rewards if the account closes. Pull your free reports at annualcreditreport.com and check that the account's status is reported correctly.
If the issuer closes the account
Move autopay bills and subscriptions to another card before the closing date so payments do not fail. Pay any remaining balance by the due dates shown on your statements. Ask the issuer whether it offers a product change to a card it still issues; only the issuer can offer that, and the terms are whatever its letter says. A closed account in good standing can stay on your credit report, but the lost credit limit raises your utilization, so watch your balances on the cards you keep.
Choosing a replacement
The alternatives above are cards we list as open, picked because they serve a similar purpose. They are not the same product, and their fees, rewards and approval standards differ. Read each card's page on this site and the issuer's own terms before applying, and check the issuer rules guide if you have opened several cards recently.

Frequently asked questions
Can I still apply for Citi Rewards+ or U.S. Bank Altitude Reserve?
Not through the issuer's site as of October 15, 2026. Both product addresses redirect to other pages: Citi's to Citi Strata, U.S. Bank's to its card overview.
My card stopped taking applications. Will my account be closed?
Not necessarily. Deserve has told EDU cardholders their accounts are closing; for the other cards we found no such notice. Watch for letters from your issuer.
How much notice do I get before my card's terms change?
Regulation Z generally requires 45 days' written notice before a significant change, such as a higher APR or annual fee.
Is the replacement card the same as the old one?
No. The alternatives are open cards with a similar purpose. Compare the fees and rewards on each card's own page.
